There two types of chimneys. The first and most well known are masonry chimneys. These chimneys are built from brick, block and or stone. These chimneys are easily identifiable by looking at the exterior of the chimney and identifying the above mentioned building material. This type of chimney needs a flu cap installed if one isn't present. Check to see if it has a cap.

Masonry chimney

The second type of chimney is the double or triple lined metal pipe chimney. This chimney has a siding body around it and has no masonry materials built into it. This chimney comes with an installed cap check to see if the cap is still attached. This is a typical cap and pipe configuration that should be above your roof line
