Rabid Fox Captured, Killed in South Arlington

County health officials report one person bitten

ARLINGTON, Va. – A fox that bit a woman in south Arlington and was subsequently captured and destroyed by animal control officers has tested positive for rabies, Arlington County public health officials announced today. The woman was bitten on May 9, 2008 in the 5100 block of S. 12^th Road, in the 22204 zip code area of Arlington County. She is now receiving anti-rabies treatment. A state laboratory in Richmond confirmed on Wednesday that the fox was rabid. The Arlington County Public Health Division is working with the Arlington Animal Welfare League and local Civic Associations to identify any other people or animals who may have been exposed.“Rabies is endemic in our area. People need to be aware that there are wild animals, including foxes, in many of our neighborhoods,” said Richard Cole, chief of the County’s Environmental Health Bureau. “Never approach or handle a wild animal. If you see one behaving in a strange or aggressive manner, call the Animal Welfare League.”

Background:

Rabies is an infectious viral disease that affects the nervous system of humans and other mammals. The virus is spread through the saliva of infected mammals. Humans get rabies after saliva gets directly into their eyes, nose, mouth or a wound. Without prompt anti-rabies treatment following exposure, rabies is a fatal disease.

Although almost any mammal can be infected, the disease most commonly appears in carnivores. Domestic dogs and cats can also be infected with the disease; however, required rabies vaccination of dogs and cats has almost eliminated the disease in domestic animals in Virginia.

Arlington County Public Health Division tips to reduce the risk from rabies:

Be a responsible pet owner. Keep vaccinations up-to-date for all dogs, cats and ferrets. This not only keeps your pets from getting rabies, but also provides a barrier of protection for you if your pet is bitten by a rabid animal.
Keep pets under direct supervision so they do not come in contact with wild animals. Obey leash laws for dogs and restrict cats from running loose. If your pet is bitten by a wild animal or exposed to a bat, seek veterinary assistance for your pet immediately.
Never adopt wild animals or bring them into your home. Do not try to nurse sick animals to health. Call the Arlington Animal Welfare League at 703-931-9241 to remove stray or sick animals in your neighborhood.
Avoid direct contact with unfamiliar animals. Do not handle, feed or unintentionally attract wild animals with open garbage cans or litter.
Teach children never to handle unfamiliar animals, wild or domestic, even if they appear friendly. "Love your own, leave other animals alone" is a good principle for children to learn.
Prevent bats from entering living quarters or occupied spaces in homes, churches, schools and other similar areas where they might come in contact with people or pets.
If bitten or exposed to saliva from any wild or domestic mammal, wash the bite wound immediately with soap and water, contact the Arlington Animal Welfare League at 703-931-9241 and consult with your physician.

Hello,

I called "Animal Bat & Bird Extractors" this morning when I had heard an unknown creature rustling around my kitchen ceiling above my head. I received a timely call back from Tim (the owner) who gave me a reasonable fee estimate and a commitment to arrive at my home in Arlington between 1 and 4 pm. Tim arrived at 1 and it was apparent to me he had the situation under control. After Tim eliminated the possibilities of points of entry to my home, Tim determined that the creature had to be a bird (I was concerned it may have been a raccoon!!), and identified the vent the bird had flown through. Tim helped me with affixing vent covers to two areas that needed such a cover (including repairing a mangled dryer vent 25 feet in the air). Then Tim cut a small hole in my ceiling beneath a hidden light fixture and placed a box under the hole. Within minutes the bird fell into the box, and Tim released the bird off my back porch. Tim was very friendly, helpful and did a great job. Should I ever need extraction assistance again, I know who I'll be calling. Thanks again Tim!
