First identify the type of animal in yard.  If it's a raccoon then look at the upper areas of your house to see if it might reside in your attic.  Look for a missing chimney cap. Look for a 5 inch in diameter hole at the eaves or under the soffet.  Look for an attic fan on the roof, these are entrances to your attic.

If its an opossum look at ground areas like low ground level decks and or holes under your concrete ft pouch. they also reside under sheds.  look over the fence to your neighbors house and look for the same types of places the animals will live under.

Rats will leave runways to and from their living areas to their feeding areas. For example, check bird feeder runways to concrete additions and porches. Rats will burrow  under concrete to keep heat when the temperature goes down.

Skunks love living under concrete, the concrete holds the heat at night and it's a safe place to raise their young

Squirrels are present when a food or shelter is close by. They aren't big travelers. check for attic fans and 3 inch diameter holes in the upper part of the house

Snakes only live close to food, water, heat, and shelter when they're going to shed their skins. The snake will enter your house ,mostly on ground level to shed their skins. Mulch beds are a wonderful place for snakes to lay their eggs. The mulch ferments, creating heat, warming and incubating the eggs.
